Idaho e-bike and e-trike laws
Idaho does not require a license, registration, insurance or helmet for an e-bike under 750 watts, and there is no minimum age. Ride on roads, bike lanes and multiuse paths wherever bicycles are allowed, unless a local sign or ordinance says no. One catch for trikes: Idaho law defines a 'bicycle' as having two wheels, so a three-wheel e-trike isn't clearly covered by the e-bike rules, though no other vehicle category fits it either.
- Rules below
- Apply to e-bikes. Whether Idaho law counts a trike as one isn't settled; see below.
- License
- No driver's license, registration, title, license plate or insurance is required for an electric-assisted bicycle.
- Registration
- No state registration or plate is required.
- Insurance
- No insurance is required (e-bikes are exempt from financial-responsibility rules).
- Helmet
- Idaho has no state helmet law for bicycle or e-bike riders of any age (none found in Title 49, chapter 7).
- Minimum age
- There is no state minimum age for any class of e-bike.
- Where you can ride
- You may ride an e-bike anywhere a regular bicycle may go, with the same rights and duties as a bicyclist, unless a local ordinance or posted sign excludes e-bikes.
- Sidewalks
- State law lets bicycles use sidewalks (yielding to and warning pedestrians) unless signs prohibit it; because e-bikes get bicycle privileges, the same applies unless a city bans e-bikes or bikes there.
Does an e-trike count as an e-bike?
“Bicycle" means every vehicle propelled exclusively by human power upon which any person may ride, having two (2) tandem wheels, and except scooters and similar devices.”Idaho Code § 49-103(1) ('bicycle'); § 49-106(1) ('electric-assisted bicycle' means 'a bicycle equipped with...') ↗

How the trikes we list are treated in Idaho
Idaho law doesn't settle whether a trike is an e-bike, so we can't say which trikes fit. 80 of the 191 we list would need checking even if trikes do count; they're listed below. We check motor power, top speed and the stated class. Not legal advice.

What we couldn't confirm from official sources (3)
- How Idaho police/ITD actually treat a three-wheel pedal e-trike under 750 W given 'bicycle' requires two tandem wheels; no official guidance found (web search was unavailable for this pass).
- Local e-bike restrictions (e.g., Boise Greenbelt or downtown sidewalk rules) were not checked.
- Whether Idaho's OUI statute (49-8) applies to e-bike riders was not checked.
This page explains the law in plain language. It is not legal advice. Cities, counties and park agencies can add their own rules; check posted signs and confirm with your state before you ride.
